WORCESTER OLD ST MARTIN
Descriptive Notes:
In 1905, following Ecclesiastical parish changes, Worcester St
Martin's Church, in the Cornmarket ceased to be the parish church of
St. Martin's parish, becoming a chapel of ease
in St.
Swithun's Parish. The status and parochial rights were
transferred to the London
Road Mission Church, pending the building and consecration of the new
St.
Martin's Church in April 1911. The congregation at the St
Martin's Church in the Cornmarket expressed a wish to retain the same
dedication, so that the church became known as Worcester Old St Martin
Church to distinguish it from the new St
Martin's Church in London Road. St Swithun ceased to be a parish in 1978. The parish then became Worcester St Martin in the Cornmarket. St. Swithun's Church is now closed for worship and has been in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust since 1977. [5] [40]
