LONGDON, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of PERSHORE, county of WORCESTER, 3 miles (S. S. W.) from Upton upon Severn, containing 640 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacies of Castle-Morton and Chaseley, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester, rated in the king's books at £14. 17. 3½ and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is surmounted by a tower of brick. A free school was founded, about 1660, and endowed with land by Giles Godwin, Esq., for the instruction of children belonging to this parish; the master receives £28 per annum, for which he instructs about forty children in reading, writing, and arithmetic. A court leet is held annually, for Longdon, Castlemeston, and Chaseley. [Topographical Dictionary of England 1831 by Samuel Lewis]
