HOLT, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of
OSWALDSLOW, county of WORCESTER, 6 miles (N.N.W.) from Worcester,
containing,
with the chapelry of Little Witley, 657 inhabitants. The living is a
rectory,
in the archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester, rated in the king's books
at £15.

Lord Foley was patron in 1811. The church, dedicated to St. Martin, is
a good
specimen of the early style of English architecture. Some remains of a
castle,
erected by the Beauchamps, are still visible. A bridge of five arches,
two
hundred and sixty-six feet in length, has been erected over the Severn:
the
span of the central arch, which is of iron, is one hundred and fifty
feet, and
its height above the level of the river, at low water, thirtyfive feet;
the
other arches, two at each end, are, of stone. [Topographical
